About
St. George's Church is about 300 years old. It was built in 1732 under the reign of Archbishop Makarios and the governor of Tripoli, Shiliman Pasha, above the cave of St. George. It is a rocky cavity under the altar of St. Garogius and was a place of worship before the church was built. The church has three galleries, the middle hall is named after St. George, and on the left is the gallery of the Virgin Mary and on the right is the gallery of St. Decetrius. The church is considered a distinctive architectural masterpiece and it clearly shows the influences of the art of Crusader and Mamluk architecture. It has a collection of beautiful and distinctive icons, most of which dates back to the early 19th century.
